As a studio, over the past year and a half, SockMonkey has more than doubled in size. As we continue to grow and welcome more members to the team, we are committed to promoting diversity in the workplace.
An initiative facilitated by Ukie and backed by some of the UK games industry’s most well-known companies (Electronic Arts, Facebook Gaming, Jagex, King and Microsoft Xbox) the #RaiseTheGame pledge is centred around inclusion and diversity within the gaming industry.
SockMonkey is one of the newest studios to sign the pledge which is built upon three core pillars:
- Creating a diverse workforce (by recruiting as fairly and widely as possible)
- Shaping inclusive and welcoming places to work (by educating and inspiring people to take more personal responsibility for fostering and promoting diversity and inclusion)
- Reflecting greater diversity in our work (by striving for this in everything we do, from game design and development, through to marketing and other support services)
No matter where a studio is on their inclusion journey, #RaiseTheGame offer guidance and support on how to promote neutrality in the workplace, from writing inclusive job descriptions, to helping combat the unconscious biases found in every company. For example, in Summer they hosted a 60-minute, lunch n’ learn webinar in conjunction with Pride month titled: How to be an Effective Ally.
Advocating for members of all minority backgrounds, #RaiseTheGame is designed to inspire meaningful, cultural and behavioural change across the board in the gaming industry. They know that every business will be in a different place on their diversity journey so discuss with you the ways your business can promote diversity, based on your current situation.
Not only offering advice from behind the scenes, #RaiseTheGame champions those who sign the pledge through catch-ups on their blog with ‘one year on’ pieces which celebrate the work pledgers have carried out since signing up.
#Raise the game are aiming to have 200 gaming companies signed up to the pledge by the end of the year, if you would like to know more information about the initiative then follow the link.
